TPI Golf Performance Screening
Play Better Golf. Start With Your Body.
At Healing Star Physical Therapy and Wellness, our TPI-certified clinician uses the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) screening protocol to assess the physical factors that directly influence your golf swing. By identifying mobility restrictions, strength deficits, and movement limitations specific to golf, we can design a targeted program that helps you swing more efficiently, stay out of pain, and play the best golf of your life.
We serve golfers throughout Monmouth County, NJ — including those who play at courses in Freehold, Eatontown, Rumson, Deal, Spring Lake, Manalapan, and surrounding communities.

What Is TPI?
The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. TPI has studied thousands of golfers at every level — from weekend players to PGA Tour professionals — and identified the specific physical characteristics that drive swing efficiency, consistency, and injury risk.
A TPI-certified physical therapist is trained to assess your body through the lens of golf — understanding exactly how limitations in your hip mobility, thoracic rotation, shoulder flexibility, or core stability show up as compensations in your swing.
The Body-Swing Connection
TPI research has established a direct link between specific physical limitations and common swing characteristics. For example:
- Loss of posture — often linked to limited hip mobility or poor core stability
- Early extension — frequently caused by restricted hip internal rotation or ankle mobility
- Reverse spine angle — commonly associated with limited thoracic (mid-back) rotation
- Chicken wing — often connected to restricted shoulder internal rotation or forearm mobility
- Sway or slide — frequently tied to hip instability or gluteal weakness
- Casting/scooping — can be driven by wrist or forearm mobility restrictions
When your body can’t physically get into the positions a fundamentally sound swing requires, it will always find a workaround — and those workarounds become swing faults. No amount of range time or lesson work can permanently fix a swing fault that has a physical cause.
What the TPI Screening Involves
The TPI screening is a 16-point movement assessment that evaluates the specific mobility, stability, and movement patterns required for an efficient golf swing. It takes approximately 45–60 minutes and includes:
- Pelvic rotation and tilt assessment
- Thoracic (mid-back) rotation range of motion
- Hip mobility and internal/external rotation
- Shoulder and thoracic flexibility
- Core stability and anti-rotation strength
- Single-leg balance and lower body stability
- Overhead deep squat and lower quarter mobility
- Lat (latissimus dorsi) length and shoulder function
At the end of your screening, you’ll receive a clear picture of which physical limitations may be contributing to your swing faults or pain — and a targeted plan to address them.
Who Should Get a TPI Screening?
A TPI screening is valuable for any golfer who:
- Is experiencing pain during or after golf (back pain, hip pain, elbow pain, wrist pain)
- Has swing faults that aren’t responding to lessons or range work
- Wants to add distance and consistency to their game
- Is returning to golf after an injury or surgery
- Wants to play pain-free for years to come
- Is a competitive or high-handicap player looking for a physical edge
Golf Injuries We Treat
Whether your pain came on gradually from thousands of repetitions or suddenly from one bad swing, our team has the expertise to treat golf-related injuries and get you back on the course:
- Low back pain — the most common golf injury; often driven by poor hip and thoracic mobility
- Golf elbow (medial epicondylitis) — inner elbow pain from grip and impact forces
- Rotator cuff strains and shoulder pain
- Hip pain and hip impingement
- Wrist and hand injuries — including hook of hamate fractures and tendinopathy
- Knee pain from rotational loading
- Rib stress injuries
Schedule Your TPI Screening
Don’t let physical limitations hold your game back. Whether you’re chasing more yards off the tee, trying to finally break 80, or just want to play 18 holes without your back locking up — the TPI screening is the smartest investment you can make in your golf game.
