Pre & Post-Surgical Rehabiliation

Prepare Better. Recover Faster. Regain Everything.

Surgery is often a beginning, not an end. Whether you’re preparing for an upcoming procedure or rebuilding strength and function after one, the physical therapy you do — before and after — plays a decisive role in how well and how quickly you recover.

At Healing Star Physical Therapy and Wellness, we partner with orthopedic surgeons, spine specialists, and hand surgeons throughout Monmouth County to provide seamless pre- and post-surgical care. Our goal is to help you walk into surgery as strong as possible — and walk out of it ahead of schedule.

Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation — Why It Matters

Pre-surgical physical therapy — often called ‘prehabilitation’ or prehab — is one of the most evidence-supported investments you can make before an operation. Research consistently shows that patients who complete a targeted prehab program:

  • Recover faster and achieve functional milestones sooner after surgery
  • Experience less post-operative pain and swelling
  • Require fewer rehabilitation sessions to reach their goals
  • Have stronger muscles going into surgery — which means less atrophy to reverse during recovery
  • Report greater confidence and less anxiety about the procedure

Prehab is especially valuable before joint replacement, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and spinal surgery — procedures where entering surgery with maximum strength and mobility makes a measurable difference in outcomes.

What Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Looks Like

Your post-surgical rehabilitation at Healing Star PT is carefully staged to match what your body can handle at each phase of recovery. We work closely with your surgeon’s protocol — and communicate directly with their office when needed — to ensure your progression is safe, appropriate, and goal-driven.

Phase 1 — Protection and Swelling Control

In the early post-operative period, our focus is on protecting the surgical repair, managing pain and swelling, and restoring foundational mobility. We use gentle joint mobilization, edema management techniques, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to reactivate inhibited muscles, and Class IV laser therapy to accelerate tissue healing and reduce post-operative inflammation.

Phase 2 — Strength and Motion Restoration

As healing progresses, we systematically rebuild strength, restore full range of motion, and retrain neuromuscular control. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is particularly valuable in this phase — allowing significant strength gains at very low loads, ideal when full weight-bearing or heavy resistance is still restricted.

Phase 3 — Functional Training and Return to Activity

In the final phase, training becomes increasingly functional and sport- or activity-specific. We use the VALD HumanTrak system to objectively measure movement quality, symmetry, and performance benchmarks — ensuring return-to-activity decisions are based on data, not guesswork.

Our Hand Therapy Program

Healing Star PT is home to a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) — a specialized credential held by fewer than 10% of physical therapists. For patients recovering from hand, wrist, and elbow surgery, this expertise is invaluable. Our hand therapy program includes custom splinting, scar management, edema control, tendon gliding, and progressive strengthening tailored to the specific demands of your surgery and daily activities.

Do I Need a Referral?

New Jersey is a direct-access state — you can begin physical therapy without a physician’s referral. If you’ve had imaging (MRI, X-ray) or are working with a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon, we are happy to coordinate your care.
