Class IV B Laser Therapy
Light That Heals. Results You Feel.
Class IV B Laser Therapy is one of the most powerful and effective tools available in modern physical therapy — and Healing Star PT is proud to offer it at both our Eatontown and Freehold, NJ locations.
Used by professional and Olympic sports teams across the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and FIFA, Class IV laser therapy has established itself as a gold-standard modality for pain management and accelerated tissue healing. It is FDA-cleared, non-invasive, and can be used safely as an effective complement — or in some cases, an alternative — to pharmaceutical pain management.
How It Works — Photobiomodulation
Class IV laser therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation. The laser device delivers concentrated photons of light energy directly into the affected tissue. These photons are absorbed by the cells, triggering a cascade of healing responses at the cellular level:
- Increased ATP production — the cell’s energy currency, accelerating tissue repair and cellular regeneration
- Improved local circulation — bringing oxygen and nutrients to injured or inflamed tissue
- Reduction of inflammation and swelling — modulating the inflammatory cascade at the cellular level
- Stimulation of the lymphatic system — clearing cellular waste and metabolic byproducts from the treated area
- Release of endorphins — triggering the body’s natural pain-relief mechanisms
During treatment, patients typically experience a gentle, soothing warmth at the treatment site. This comfortable sensation marks the beginning of an 18–24 hour process of enhanced cellular activity and tissue healing.
Contact and Non-Contact Delivery
Your therapist will select between contact and non-contact delivery methods based on your specific needs. In the contact method, the laser handpiece is gently pressed against the skin — allowing the therapist to move it across the tissue for a laser massage effect that enhances depth of penetration. Non-contact delivery is used for sensitive or fragile tissue areas such as open wounds or post-surgical sites.
Conditions Laser Therapy Treats
- Acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain
- Arthritis and joint inflammation — hip, knee, shoulder, and spine
- Tendinopathy — Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, and gluteal tendons
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Neck pain and cervicogenic headaches
- Low back pain and lumbar disc conditions
- Sports injuries and muscle strains
- Nerve pain and peripheral neuropathy
- Post-surgical healing and scar tissue management
- Wound healing and tissue repair
- TMJ dysfunction
- Carpal tunnel and repetitive strain injuries
What to Expect During Your Sessions
Each laser therapy session lasts approximately 5–15 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the condition involved. Treatment is delivered directly to the skin — clothing over the area must be removed to allow full light penetration. You and your therapist will wear protective eyewear during the session.
Most patients begin to notice meaningful improvement within 3–5 sessions. A typical course of care is 6–12 sessions, though some acute conditions respond more quickly. Research consistently shows that laser therapy combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise produces superior outcomes compared to any single modality alone.
Is Laser Therapy Safe?
Class IV B Laser Therapy is safe when performed by a trained clinician. Protective eyewear is required during treatment. Laser therapy is generally not used directly over cancerous lesions, during pregnancy (over the abdomen/low back), or directly over implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers. Your therapist will review your health history to confirm you are an appropriate candidate.
Do I Need a Referral?
New Jersey is a direct-access state — you can begin physical therapy, including laser therapy, without a physician’s referral. If your physician has recommended laser therapy as part of your treatment, we are happy to coordinate care with their office.
