Ancient Technique. Modern Results.
Cupping therapy has been used for centuries to promote healing and relieve pain — and today, it’s a well-established tool in the physical therapist’s toolkit. At Healing Star PT, our therapists use cupping as part of a comprehensive treatment approach to address muscle tightness, soft tissue restrictions, and chronic pain.
What Is Cupping?
Cupping involves placing specially designed cups on the skin and creating a suction effect that lifts the underlying soft tissue. Unlike traditional massage, which compresses tissue downward, cupping works in the opposite direction — decompressing layers of muscle and fascia to release adhesions, improve circulation, and restore normal tissue mobility.
How It Works
Pain and dysfunction often develop when layers of muscle, fascia, and connective tissue become bound together — a result of injury, overuse, or inflammation. These adhesions restrict movement, trap metabolic waste, and create the chronic tightness that resists conventional stretching or massage.
Cupping separates these layers, allowing them to glide freely again. As the tissue releases, blood flow increases to the area, delivering oxygen and nutrients while flushing out waste and toxins. The lymphatic system is also stimulated, helping to reduce excess fluid and further support tissue recovery.
What Cupping Can Help With
- Muscle tightness and chronic tension
- Myofascial pain and trigger points
- Limited range of motion
- Sports recovery and overuse injuries
- Post-injury tissue restrictions
- Neck, back, shoulder, and hip tightness
What to Expect
Cupping is typically performed alongside manual therapy and therapeutic exercise as part of your individualized treatment session. The cups may be left stationary or moved across the skin (sliding cupping) depending on the area being treated. You may notice circular marks on your skin afterward — this is normal and reflects increased blood flow to the surface tissue. These marks are not bruises and typically fade within a few days.
Most patients find cupping to be comfortable and even relaxing. When combined with the rest of your treatment plan, it can significantly accelerate your recovery and provide meaningful relief from stubborn pain.
